“Lovely girl of the FSLN

With your boots and pants of drill
machine gun in hand
Your long flowing hair
that grew in the month of April.

You left your lover
to begin another relation
For your true love
Is not he but another
It’s the love of an entire nation.

Girl, simple girl
With your own liberation begun
Allow my versus of love
To entwine themselves in your gun.”

This song is a constant reference point for me when I explain what I mean when I say that revolutionaries need to be politically agile and willing to learn how to “swim in stormy waters.”

In Memorandum Militar 1-79, Luis Enrique Mejia Godoy sings some helpful tips on tactics and strategy mean to be disseminated during the 1979 Nicaraguan insurrection which ultimately overthrew the Somoza dynasty. Since most of the population was illiterate at the time, the Sandinista Front had to find innovative ways to train people to defeat the substantially better-armed National Guard. The Mejia Godoy brothers were like “hey, why don’t we make some songs teaching people how to field strip rifles and shit?” They did, and it was a massive contribution to only the second successful revolution in Latin America, and one of the only revolutions in history to come to power largely via urban insurrection.

Obviously, I’m going to disagree with this picture and find it offensive, but I also just really find it ignorant. All three of these religions have members that adhere to strict pacifism, and I’ve met some that are anarchists that belong to these religions as well.

Religion isn’t the problem. Wanting to convert people to a certain relgion isn’t a problem (at face value, not when discussing the disagreements within these religions) as long as it’s done respectfully and the individuals involved know they can’t convert through force. All of these religions are based on the fact that force is not equivalent to conversion, whether certain individuals attempt to do that or not.

There are several atheists, agnostics, and indifferent people out there that support the government. The only reason religious people do the same is because government has tainted their practices and their minds, not their religions.

We need to stop insulting people’s personal beliefs or we aren’t going to get anywhere. Most of all, we need to stop acting like getting rid of religion is equivalent to getting rid of the government. All you would really be doing if you were effective in carrying out what this image condones is getting rid of religion and replacing it with the possibility of more government servitude than was already present. The kind of people that blindly follow the stereotypes that fit these religions without real critical thought behind their beliefs would only find a need to replace their mindless servitude to dogma with mindless servitude to the government. You’d have a much bigger problem on your hands.
